The new Pictorial Guide of the Pennine Journey was officially launched at Settle Station on Saturday 17th April. The book, published by Frances Lincoln (current publishers of all of Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides) is priced at £13-99 and will be on sale to the public from 3rd June onwards.
In September 1938, Alfred Wainwright made a solitary walk through the Pennines to Hadrian’s Wall and back. On completion of the walk he wrote up an account which he then put away in a drawer. However whilst putting together Wainwright on the Pennine Way in 1982 he was reminded of this writing and after discussions with Jenny Dereham, his editor at the publishers at the time, this book was eventually published in 1986.
This new illustrated guide, written by members of the Wainwright Society, is a recreation of this walk adapted for today’s roads and rights-of-way, taking a route that Wainwright himself might have chosen if he was planning it today. It passes through all the major towns and villages visited by AW on his original walk in 1938. The route is 247 miles long and is divided into 18 stages. With maps and illustrations inspired by the work of AW, this labour of love is essential for all those who wish to follow in Wainwright’s footsteps.
