The Kirkby Stephen Visitor Centre can be found right in the market square of the town. The centre has a wide range of walking guides, leaflets and maps along with information on many other attractions in the locality.

The Upper Eden Community Interest Company has taken over the former Kirkby Stephen Tourist Information Centre to run a community-led Upper Eden Visitor Centre. The Centre highlights the local area and offers retail opportunities to local people and artisans.

You can download to an app or print out three free walks near Kirkby Stephen from the Walkingworld website. One is a circuit of the Smardale nature reserve including the imposing viaduct. There is an exploration of the Eden Viaducts near Kirkby Stephen that includes I-Spy sheets for spotting features en-route. The third is a rugged hill walk to the summit of Wild Boar Fell.
